Niantic Spatial and the Human Machine Collaboration Institute have used drone capture and 3D reconstruction to build a city-scale digital twin of Rancho Cordova, California’s Innovation Region – going from flight to running traffic simulation without hand-modeling or a multi-year procurement cycle, and doing it at a fidelity where you can read a building sign and measure a street width. The project is the spatial foundation for AiR Rancho Cordova, the city’s $5 million AI and robotics initiative, and an early proof point that accurate, machine-readable city models are no longer just within reach of global mega cities.

3D modelling apartment views of urban greenery

Two apartments in the same building at the same address can have radically different relationships to urban greenery depending on floor, orientation, and what’s blocking the view and RMIT researcher Shinjita Das has developed a 3D spatial method called AGVM to actually measure it, without the cost and complexity of lidar or full building information models. Applied to 30 Melbourne apartment buildings, the model found that grey infrastructure made up roughly 73% of what residents could see on average, and revealed that height doesn’t reliably improve greenery views, it all depends on what’s in the way.
