Reframing Reference: The Modernization of America’s National Spatial Reference System
The geospatial community and any industry that relies on precise location data throughout the United States needs to be gearing up for the modernized National Spatial Reference System. This revamping of the coordinate system that defines latitude, longitude, height, scale, gravity, and orientation throughout the nation is being led by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS), with the modernization expected to go into effect next year after over a decade of work.
Throughout the past year and a half, Geo Week News has been speaking with representatives from NGS as well as the Geospatial Center for the Arctic and Pacific (GCAP) about the different elements of this work. Within this report, you can find all of this coverage in one place, including some of the specific work that the organizations have done to create the base for this modernized NSRS, details about the importance of technology like GNSS, how bathymetry in particular could be affected by this, and so much more. Organizations that get ahead of this shift in the geospatial landscape will have a head start over competitors and ensure high-quality work through the transition, and now is the time to start gathering this crucial information.
