Wingcopter’s drones to support disaster-management surveying in Japan

Itochu, PASCO, and YellowScan Japan are deploying Wingcopter's fixed-wing VTOL drones equipped with Lidar scanners for large-scale aerial surveying across Japan's mountainous terrain. The Wingcopter 198 can survey over 1,000 hectares in a single 45-minute flight, targeting disaster management applications including hazard mapping and rapid damage assessment. With 70% of Japan consisting of steep terrain prone to natural disasters, the partnership aims to automate surveying workflows while reducing costs and safety risks associated with traditional ground teams and crewed aircraft.

Penguin Conservationists Use Maps and Satellite Images to Win Landmark Court Case

Conservationists achieved Argentina's first ecocide conviction after a rancher bulldozed roads through Magellanic penguin nesting grounds near Punta Tombo, killing over 100 penguins and destroying 175+ nests. GIS expert Sam Guilford analyzed satellite imagery to create a visual timeline proving penguins were present during construction, contradicting the defendant's claims. The landmark verdict set new standards for environmental justice in South America and prompted expansion of the Punta Tombo Natural Protected Area from 500 to nearly 4,000 acres. The case established satellite imagery as legal evidence in Argentine courts and led to creation of a new environmental prosecutor's office in Patagonia.
