The Survey Association is developing the Unity Charter, a UK-led initiative aimed at giving the global geospatial profession a shared identity and coordinated voice, after a stakeholder event surfaced familiar frustrations: surveyors feel undervalued, brought into projects too late, and increasingly treated as a commodity in a race to the lowest price. Built around the provocation “if geospatial surveyors stopped tomorrow,” the campaign makes the case that the profession’s problem isn’t capability, its visibility, and that fixing it will take unified messaging, stronger standards, earlier project involvement, and a talent pipeline that makes the next generation actually want in.

Spatial data boosts rural health access insights

Researchers at Deakin University’s Centre for Australian Research into Access are making the case that traditional administrative boundary units are too blunt a tool for understanding rural health access, masking pockets of unmet need behind averages that span hundreds or thousands of square kilometres, and replacing them with address-level spatial analysis that calculates real-world travel times from individual dwellings to GPs, hospitals, and schools. The approach has already been adopted at a health service spanning 300km and 250,000 residents, and its methodology is now feeding into national ABS mapping tools designed to guide evidence-based investment in health and education services.
