Utah-based heavy civil contractor WW Clyde has made mobile LiDAR the connective tissue of its digital construction workflow, using ground-based scanning not just for pre-construction surveys, but for progress monitoring, as-built documentation, and dispute protection across highway corridors stretching 20 to 40 miles. The payoff goes well beyond the expected: when a 682.5 MW solar project discovered 148,000 pilings had been installed at incorrect elevations, WW Clyde’s mobile scanner captured the top-center 3D coordinates of every pile — giving the general contractor the data it needed to decide whether to adjust or redo the work.

The World Geospatial Industry Council has released a new report sounding the alarm on a quiet but consequential shift in how geospatial data is produced — as AI increasingly generates and synthesizes spatial data at scale, the sector is moving from measurement-based trust to model-based trust, bringing with it risks of silent errors, untraceable lineage, and blurred accountability when decisions go wrong. The report lays out six properties of decision-grade data and a phased action plan spanning provenance tracking and metadata standards now, cryptographic verification within two years, and a federated industry-wide governance framework within three — with WGIC Executive Director Aaron Addison warning that a vulnerability anywhere along the sensor-to-decision data chain propagates all the way downstream.
