Inside Commercial UAV Expo 2026: The One Where The Industry Keeps Maturing



Each year, the Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas attracts the commercial drone industry, and the discussions become increasingly realistic. g produced a clear sense that this industry is no longer waiting for permission to grow. It’s building the tools and frameworks it expects to need and daring regulators to keep up.

Two Regulators, One Destination

A big moment of the final day was the keynote panel bringing together Robert Reckert from the FAA and Daan Dousi from EASA, moderated by Avtrain CEO Julie Garland, to discuss global regulatory convergence. The two agencies agree on their destination but often disagree on how to get there.

The FAA’s philosophy is fundamentally data-driven and enable-first—run controlled pilot programs, collect real-world data, and write rules grounded in actual operating experience rather than theoretical risk modeling. The immediate test case is Part 108, the long-awaited BVLOS framework. Reckert offered a cautiously optimistic timeline, saying the agency is hoping the final rule lands before the end of the calendar year. He framed it in American football terms: “It feels like we’re on the 10-yard line and we just got to get it in the end zone.”

EASA’s approach centers on SORA, the Specific Operations Risk Assessment, which sorts operations into risk-based categories with proportionality for population density and traffic volume. Dousi was honest about its reputation for complexity but argued that complexity enables flexibility. Notably, he signaled that EASA is learning from the FAA’s model, pointing to its newly enabled regulatory sandbox authority as a step toward an enable-first approach.

What was striking wasn’t the differences, though; it was mutual respect. Both speakers referenced bilateral safety cooperation in crewed aviation as proof these agencies can find common ground. The takeaway: the gap looks wider on the surface than it actually is. Both want safe, scalable, normalized BVLOS operations, and both have a shared history of convergence. They are simply taking different roads, shaped by different legal traditions and public attitudes.

The Public Perception Divide

That optimism didn’t extend equally to every topic. The discussion of public perception revealed a genuine transatlantic divide. Reckert was broadly positive, noting the American public tends to be accepting of drone capabilities when they understand them, differentiating between medical deliveries and more mundane applications. Dousi was more cautious. In Europe, the public is more apprehensive, and while medical delivery enjoys strong support, other applications face a steeper climb. His prescription was community-focused: engage at the local level, not just through national authorities, to build trust from the ground up. The message was that regulation alone won’t normalize drone operations if the public isn’t brought along.

The Show Floor Tells Its Story

Beyond regulation, the expo floor was a reminder that the hardware side of the industry is moving fast. The product launches scattered across the week pointed to broader themes rather than just spec-sheet updates.

Signal resilience surfaced as a concern, with new anti-jamming GNSS antennas built to military standards, an acknowledgment that operating environments are getting harder, not easier. Redundancy and safety engineering drove a dual-battery drone launch designed for BVLOS over populated areas, raising the question of how to build hardware safe enough for the environments regulators are slowly opening up. 

The infrastructure layer got attention with modular remote ID detection systems, reflecting the reality that knowing who is flying what and where is becoming foundational as more drones fill the sky. On the energy side, a new battery cell hitting 500 Wh/kg on conventional manufacturing equipment spoke to a shift from proving what is possible to figuring out how to produce it at scale. In sensing, new lidar and multispectral-thermal payloads were less about pushing the technical frontier and more about making high-end capability practical and deployable on the platforms operators actually fly.

The Distance Is Closing

Stepping back, the week painted a picture of an industry maturing on every front. Regulators are talking to each other, learning from each other, and acknowledging publicly that their differences are matters of method, not destination. Hardware makers are building for a future they believe is coming. The hallway conversations, the ones that don’t make the press releases, were about practical questions: how to operate safely over populated areas, how to build public trust, how to make batteries that last long enough to matter, and how to detect every drone in the sky so integration becomes a lived reality.

There is still work to be done, and Part 108 isn’t final, SORA is still complex, and public perception is still uneven. But the distance between where the industry is and where it needs to be is shorter than it looks and getting shorter every year.
