echo3D seeks to scale AR and VR by focusing on the backend

New hardware alone may not be enough to advance virtual and augmented reality applications.

Promising an easy and efficient way to scale 3D, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) projects, echo3D, previously known as echoAR, recently raised $4M in seed Round Led by Konvoy Ventures, with participation from Space Capital, Remagine Ventures, and angel investors Datadog, GitHub, and Facebook.

With an expected growth of 7.06 million units in 2020 to 76.71 million units in 2024, AR and VR devices are becoming more popular and user-friendly. However, these hardware improvements highlight the tremendous challenge the industry still faces: providing backend infrastructure to support the 3D, AR, and VR applications running on these devices, reducing file sizes and development times, and improving usability for developers and users alike. That’s where echo3D and its cloud platform can make a change.

By storing and streaming 3D, AR, and VR content in a cloud platform, echo3D makes it simple for developers and content creators to build, manage and deploy 3D applications and content, providing them with a flexible cloud infrastructure, intuitive content management system, fast content delivery network, and other tools. The platform allows developers to convert, compress, and optimize 3D models, animations, and interactive content, and stream it directly to multiple devices in real-time.

“At a time when advancements in 3D have helped AR, VR, and gaming to become billion-dollar industries, and concepts like ‘the Metaverse’ to become a reality, we are among the first to provide the backend infrastructure needed to bring these things to fruition,” said Alon Grinshpoon, Co-Founder of echo3D.

“This is a pivotal time for the augmented and virtual reality ecosystem, and we are excited to have the support of Konvoy Ventures as we continue to grow our platform and service the tech community.”

While gaming and entertainment are two of the major industries behind these two technologies, especially VR, echo3D is ready for other industries too, allowing developers to build apps for Healthcare, Home Design, Art, Training, Navigation, and much more. The platform is compatible with any 3D/AR/VR client-side SDK, such as ARCoreARKit, Vuforia, WebXR, AR.js, Oculus SDK, Microsoft HoloLens, Magic Leap, and more.

Earlier this year, the company become a Unity Verified Solutions Partner, meaning its SDK is optimized for the latest version of the Unity editor, allowing developers to move 3D assets to the cloud to reduce overall Unity app size, automatically obtain app analytics, compress & convert 3D models to and from multiple formats, auto-generate webAR links, and more. Additionally, echo3D also partnered with Aequilibrium, an AR services provider, to accelerate the creation of meaningful AR content.

Whereas before the pandemic echo3D only had 300 registered users, it has recently reached the 11.000 mark. That’s where the company's focus is right now, to reach more and more developers and content creators interested in creating 3D/AR/VR experiences. The raised $4M funds will help to bolster the company’s product offering, expand developer relations efforts, and grow its team of developers and marketers.
