Every week here at Geo Week News, we have been highlighting some of our favorite stories from around the internet that cover the geospatial, 3D, and AEC industries. Whether it’s a fascinating case study, insights from an industry thought leader, or deep dives into new tools, there is never any shortage of great writing and storytelling in this industry. Now, we’re expanding this section a bit. We will still be highlighting three stories from around the internet every week, but in addition, we will also be adding some information about some of the news that came through the industry over the last week.

So, below you will first see links to three stories that we loved this week, and then under that, check out some of the biggest news that came across the wire over the last seven days.

Stories of the Week

  • At this year’s GeoIgnite, Dr. Nadine Alameh gave a keynote talk in which she spoke to the geospatial professionals in the room about their role in our society moving forward. This article from GoGeomatics follows up on that talk, with Dr. Alameh touching on the need for the industry to drive change, the importance of AI moving forward for the industry, the crucial role of collaboration in this movement toward GeoAI, among other topics.

  • Everyone has heard the adage that data is the new oil, and there is a lot of truth to it. Industries all around the world are heavily investing in data analytics, but for some reason spatial analytics and GIS has often been left out of that conversation. This article from Matt Forrest tries to figure out how other data analytics have boomed, and how spatial analytics can follow in those footsteps.

  • It seems like every day we hear about new ways that laser scanning is being used, unlocking answers to mysteries around our planet. This article highlights one new use case, as SciTechDaily outlines how a team of researchers used terrestrial laser scanning to help figure out how small sand dunes formed on Earth, and potentially Mars.

News of the Week

  • With summer starting to get in swing, we’re hitting a slow period of news, but we do have a couple of announcements to talk about this week. We’ll start with one from Caliper Corporation, who launched their latest version of Maptitude. This is their mapping software for businesses, and this new release leans on some AI-powered assistance and other advancements to help business across different sizes analyze complex location data.

  • Elsewhere, Topcon Positioning Systems announced a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with Vemcom GmbH. The new collaboration will spark new expanded access to advanced excavator technology solutions. As GNSS solutions continue to improve, the technology’s usage in the construction industry continues to grow, and thus we can expect to see more of these collaborations between geospatial and construction moving forward.
