Point Layout software aims to boost accuracy, productivity on construction sites
With the acquisition of technology assets from Colorado-based Get The Point, LLC now complete, Autodesk on Wednesday introduced new software for layout at construction sites.
Without disclosing details of the transaction, the San Rafael, Calif.-based company rolled out Autodesk Point Layout, expanding its portfolio of BIM construction software and aiming for significant savings in layout time and cost.
Point Layout automatically creates points from BIM and CAD models within Autodesk Revit, Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Navisworks software.
3D point data drives total stations
The 3D model point data is then exported to robotic total stations, and related handheld devices or tablets, for accurate, automated placement and verification of building elements such as foundation corners and concrete-to-steel framing interfaces.Point Layout can also locate hangers used to support pre-assembled ductwork and piping in a concrete slab.
General contractors can use the software to back-check work from subcontractors as part of their quality control process. Point Layout has direct integration with Autodesk BIM 360 field management software for quality control.
Point data can also be relayed from the total station back into the 3D model to capture and maintain real-world conditions.
PCL Construction cuts waste 27% with Point Layout
By removing error-prone manual layout techniques, Point Layout improves field accuracy and productivity for faster construction, which helps building projects get completed on-time and on-budget. With fewer people on site for less time, Point Layout also helps improve construction site safety.
“On a recent project, PCL achieved a 27 percent reduction in waste, directly attributed to using the technology found in Autodesk Point Layout on concrete foundations,” said Nick Kurthm of PCL Construction, the largest general contracting organization in Canada and the sixth largest in the U.S. “This is a powerful way to extend our BIM workflow to the construction site, and we expect we can see similar – or better – savings as we use the new Autodesk software on future jobs.”
