Point Cloud Punk Rock

Over the years we’ve seen a pretty good amount of LiDAR in music videos. Radiohead made heady, gorgeous use of point clouds in their famous video for House of Cards and recently ScanLAB Projects (who seem to be everywhere these days) produced an equally beautiful if very different looking point cloud music video for French-Cuban musical sisters Ibeyi. Well, add another one to that list.

Via FARO’s UK blog, I found this music video for German post-punk band Sizarr, who also use LiDAR to great effect. Again, it’s visually stunning but has its own distinct aesthetic. The artistic possibilities in the point cloud are wide and varied.

Who says LiDAR isn’t cool? Certainly not these punks.

(Post-punk, for those of you who don’t know, is best described as the music created when 70’s punk rockers discovered art. It often blends in dub, reggae, disco, and experimentation. The music can be dance-y like Gang of Four or heavy like Joy Division. Jon Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten, helped define the genre with his “band” Public Image Limited. You have the Genre to thank for The Cure and, some would argue, The Talking Heads.)
