MR-1 provides heading accuracy in challenging environments

Topcon Positioning Systems, Inc. (TPS) on Thursday debuted its high-performance positioning and heading system, the MR-1.

The Livermore, Calif.-based firm is a subsidiary of Japan-based, $1 billion Topcon Corporation and the world’s largest manufacturer of precision GPS and GNSS systems, commercial lasers, and optical instruments for the global surveying, civil engineering, asset management, mapping, construction and agriculture industries.

The OEM GNSS system uses the MR-1 receiver module and its MG-A8 antenna to provide “centimeter-accurate RTK (real-time kinematic) positioning and better than one-tenth of a degree heading accuracy in challenging environments,” said Doug Langen, TPS GNSS product manager.

“The rugged MR-1 receiver is water and dustproof and operates at a robust operational temperature range of -40°C to 75°C,” Langen said.

When combined with Topcon’s Quartz Lock Loop technology, the MR-1 offers continuous operation during “extreme vibration and shock, typical of intense dynamic environments,” he said.

“The MG-A8 antenna of the MR-1 Heading System has a unique design for moving platforms and provides best-in-class multipath rejection. This patented antenna design also offers increased resistance to near-band interference from the satellite communications systems that are commonly found in marine applications,” Langen said.

Last month, TPS added a new rotating laser to its product line – the RL-200, providing extreme accuracy and increased operating range in single or dual slope models for general construction, engineering and agricultural land leveling applications.

Both models include an LS-80L laser sensor, designed for the high-powered laser diode and operating range of the RL-200 and providing an 1,100-meter diameter working range.

“The RL-200 uses a precise and reliable encoder system to provide superior horizontal accuracy with repeatability of plus or minus seven arc seconds,” said Tony Vanneman, TPS product marketing manager for construction products.

The RL-200 is covered by a five-year guarantee for all Topcon manufactured laser products.
