Vincent Rossi and Adam Metallo to discuss ‘Experiencing the Smithsonian in 3D’ at SPAR International 3D Measurement & Imaging Conference

3D digitization experts Vincent Rossi and Adam Metallo from the Smithsonian will jointly present a keynote address titled “Experiencing the Smithsonian in 3D” at SPAR International 3D Measurement & Imaging Conference. The 11th edition of the event will take place April 14-17, 2014 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Complete event information can be found at www.SPARPointGroup.com/International.

In their address, Mr. Rossi and Mr. Metallo will discuss the use of various 3D capture methods for iconic collections objects as well as scientific missions. The use of this new technology has the potential not only to support the Smithsonian mission, but to transform museum core functions. Researchers working in the field may not come back with specimens, but with 3D data documenting a site or a find.

Curators and educators can use 3D data as the scaffolding to tell stories or send students on a quest of discovery. Conservators can benchmark today’s condition state of a collection item against a past state – a deviation analysis of 3D data will tell them exactly what changes have occurred. All of these uses cases are accessible through the Beta Smithsonian X 3D Explorer, as well as videos documenting the project. For many of the 3D models, raw data can be downloaded to support further inquiry and 3D printing.

Mr. Rossi and Mr. Metallo are two of more than 90 experts who will be presenting at SPAR International. The 2014 program contains extensive conference programming and networking opportunities, as well as ample exhibit hall hours during which attendees can peruse the newest hardware and software solutions. Additionally, the events feature live data capture demonstrations, mobile mapping vehicles, roundtable dinner discussions, a university pavilion, technical seminars and user group meetings.

“The various elements of the program work together to ensure that the professionals who come to SPAR International with the expert education, strategic connections and cutting-edge hardware and software solutions to reduce project costs, improve workflows, enhance safety, and produce higher quality deliverables,” said Lisa Murray, SPAR International Director.

Registration is available online now. Full conference, single-day and exhibits-only passes are offered. Group discounts are also available. Early registrants receive the best rates.
