DX11.Pointcloud

Point Clouds Controling Virtual Spaces

You knew 3D capture tech can do a lot, but did you know it can be used as a gestural interface?

This is what intolight has created with their DX11.Pointcloud project. By combining a Kinect sensor, a computer, and a little creative coding, they have enabled users to interact with objects in virtual reality spaces simply by gesturing. Someday, they imagine you’ll be able use such an interface to interact with real spaces, too, dimming the lights with a wave of the arm, or turning on a coffee maker just by approaching it.

In intolight’s own words, DX11.Pointcloud is “a cutting-edge computational tool for finding meaning in space. It allows us to finely detect and track physical objects or bodies in 3D space, interpreting them as ever-changing clouds of three-dimensional pixels.”

It’s art, for sure, but it’s also a glimpse of what’s possible in the future. I just hope you have a tolerance for modern dance and hip haircuts.
