3D Scanned Dancers on the Ocean's Surface

N Lannon 3D Scan

If the weather where you live is anything like the weather right now in Portland, Maine, then I’m sorry. This video from N. Lannon’s song “Another Love” uses 3D scanning technology to put some happy, dancing people on the surface of a sunny ocean. If you’re cold and thinking of warmer weather, it might be hard to watch.

The scanning for the video was completed using three Kinect sensors. According to The Creator’s Project, where the video debuted, the sensors were set up to create a “dance zone” to capture the sixteen performers, the sock puppets, the man riding a whale, and one pregnant woman. OK, so it gets a little weird.

As the video’s producer Najeeb Tarazi explained to The Creator’s Project, “What we’re trying to do with the aesthetic of ‘Another Love’ in invert the uncanny valley – your brain knows you are looking at a pleasant artificial world, but it also senses that the characters you are seeing are actual people. The aesthetic needs grew largely out of where the depth capture was at in terms of its look: video gamey. The tech is still in early days, and so the aesthetic of the characters in the video had to be unabashedly crunchy.”
